In this article, we will tell you how to change the letter of any built-in drive in Windows 11 (except the one on which the operating system is installed). The instructions will also be useful to users of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10, as to change the drive letter you will use the system utility "Disk Management", the interface and logic of which has remained unchanged for many years.

Please note that changing the drive letter may cause errors when accessing programs installed on it. This is because the Windows registry contains strict paths to programs, files and folders specifying the drive letter. Unfortunately, changing the disc letter does not automatically check and change the paths to files and folders in the registry. So even if you change the drive letter using the system tools, the outdated references to files and programs will remain in the registry.

In any case, if you want to change the drive letter, follow these instructions.

  1. Open "Disk Management". To do this, right-click on the "Start" button and click on "Disk Management".

How do I swap drive letters?

If you want to swap drive letters, e.g. drive D should be assigned letter H and drive H should be assigned letter D, you should do the following.

  1. In the "Disk Management" window, select one drive, such as the D drive, and right-click on it.
  2. Click on the menu item "Change Drive Letter and Path...".
  3. In the window that opens, click the button "Remove".

  1. Now when a drive has no drive letter, you can assign another drive (drive H) the freed up letter D.
  2. You will then be able to assign the letter H to the disk that had previously been deleted.

This is a simple way to swap drive letters.
